Emergency Storm Cleanup

What crews should prioritize in the first 48 hours after a hurricane or major storm event.

The 48-hour window after a major storm is chaotic, and it's also when the biggest mistakes are made — both by exhausted homeowners and by out-of-state crews descending on the coast. Here's how to prioritize.

Priority order for post-storm work

1. Life-safety hazards first. Trees on the house, trees on power lines, trees blocking driveways or emergency access. Nothing else matters until these are handled.

2. Leaning trees over structures. Even if they haven't fallen, unstable leaners can go with the next gust.

3. Widow-makers — broken but caught limbs — anywhere above walkways, driveways, or play areas.

4. Debris clearing for access and insurance photography.

5. Deferred pruning and canopy assessment — weeks 2–4, once acute hazards are resolved.

Hiring safely after a storm

Hurricane season is peak season for uninsured and out-of-state crews. Before signing anything:

  • Ask to see NC business registration and certificate of insurance (general liability *and* workers' comp).
  • Get the estimate in writing — never verbal, never cash-only "today only" deals.
  • Verify a local address and truck signage.
  • Never pay large deposits up front. A small mobilization fee is normal; 50% upfront is not.

What emergency work costs

Emergency crews typically bill hourly at $250–$450 per crew, sometimes with a minimum. A tree on the house often runs $1,500–$6,000 depending on access, rigging complexity, and whether a crane is required. Utility line involvement can add scheduling delays but usually not homeowner cost.

What insurance covers (and doesn't)

Most policies cover removal *when a tree damages a covered structure* — house, garage, fence, sometimes driveway. Removal of a tree that fell without hitting anything is generally not covered. Always call your carrier before signing a removal contract; get the claim number in writing.
